Well today I had the opportunity to geek right out and it was GREAT. I went over to some friends' house last night for a night of nachos, knitting, tea, and Hercule Poirot. A really wild Friday night, let me tell you. But the real highlight of this little party was that we were all sleeping over in order to get up at 5:00am (something that all who know me realize is no small feat) and camp out in front of the local yarn store; scheduled to open at 7:00 for their Customer Appreciation Day. The first 10 people would be awarded a prize, and all yarn was 40% off until 8:00, after which the discount would be reduced hourly. This was a siren song that these knitting addicts could not resist, so off we stumbled, half asleep, into the chilly morning. We arrived at the darkened parking lot to see that two women were already there, cheerfully chatting away, and they had been there since 4:45am! The line grew steadily, as we smiled and felt smug in our assurance of that prize being ours. The women in front of us had literally memorized the layout of all the yarn in the store. They wanted to know, discuss, and advise us on the projects we intended to shop for, even going so far as to shine a friend's headlamp through the store window to show me which displays to head straight for to get the perfect silk blend for my cardigan. The staff arrived and began to tantalize us with views of displays that they were bringing out; they looked so warm and happy with their steaming cups of Tim Hortons as we gazed in and fogged up the glass.
At last the hour chimed 7 and we were allowed inside! By this time there was a considerable line and the store was full of women (and one man) who were being very politely aggressive, apologizing to each other as they managed to somehow make grabbing look gracious. It took me a while to choose a yarn that I could afford and also find enough skeins in my desired colour. In the end I bought 7 skeins of a gorgeous Noro silk/cashmere blend (pure luxury!) in a rich grass green. It is not enough to make the intended cardigan but I will make something else; the wheels are already spinning but I am resisting the urge to cast on with abandon because one does not splurge on yarn that is still expensive despite being 40% off and then waste it!
Overall it was a very fun day. Despite the fact that my 5:00 am wakeup rendered me fairly useless for the rest of the day, and I fell asleep over the supper hour. It was worth it.
In the meantime, I am continuing to destash and churn out hats; they are available online at www.ifIhadaboat.etsy.com. Here are a few of the latest:

Wasn't it fun? I was fading all afternoon and went to sleep around 5, only to wake up again at 11, after which I made myself some supper. I really should have done a bit of studying, but instead decided to wind some of my new yarny goodness, and knit a guage swatch for my sweater! And wonder of wonders, my swatch came out perfect guage on the first try!
If you come to campus on Monday, I'll show you my awesome sock yarn I chose :D
